American Rapture follows a good Catholic girl named Sophie as she navigates the outbreak of a zombie-like plague that causes the infected to display violent sexual behavior before they expire. It is a pulse-pounding adventure story certainly, but it is also an utterly brilliant story about deprogramming and the costs of emotional repression...it might be the best plague novel since The Stand. Yes, it's that good—it will make you shake, it will make you cry, it will make you cheer. Hell, it might just make you think twice before you parrot any number of the cultural learnings you never questioned previously. -DB

Moniqua Plante and Jacob York narrate this contemporary romance, which salutes southwestern cuisine, the entrepreneurial spirit, and love. Plante creates a memorable heroine in Elena, a Latina who is about to become head chef of the Orange Bear, a new upscale restaurant in Aspen. Despite her natural reserve, Elena finds herself falling in love with Julian, a Hollywood director who has invested in a number of trendy restaurants, including the Orange Bear.
Plante expertly portrays Elena's doubts, strength, and culinary expertise, while York smoothly reads some of the chapters showing the points of view of the lead male characters. Listeners will empathize with Elena as they hear her thoughts, strategies, and pain. Most of all, they'll enjoy her scrumptious recipes.

Dropping dazzling prose and devastating epiphanies, it’s no surprise that Ruth Madievsky is a poet, nor that her glittering, druggy debut—which continues the literary tradition of excavating Los Angeles’s sleazy side while offering a timely sapphic romance and hopeful recovery arc–will be devoured by fans of Ottessa Moshfegh, Raven Leilani, and, dare I say, Charles Bukowski. Though her protagonist holds everything in, narrator MONIQUA PLANTE is a direct conduit to her brain, which worries over traumas absorbed from her mentally-ill mother and Russian Jewish grandmother, her growing pill addiction, and whatever happened to her toxic fireball of a sister, who’s gone missing.
